August Ferdinand Möbius

Born 1790, died 1868 (Germany)

One of Möbius's ancestors was Martin Luther (church reformer who began Reformation). Möbius studied at Leipzig where he discovered his interest for and love of mathematics. Möbius was one of Gauss' students, who taught him astronomy in Göttingen.

Möbius is best known for the strip named after him, although he was not the first person to have described it (it was Listing, another German mathematician). Möbius was one of the pioneers in topology: you can see some pages and worksheets related to topology by clicking here.
